b*ponders :: who i am, what i love

Thanks to all who took a minute to respond to my last post. Change, it seems, is on the minds of many. I think this is healthy. In fact, I think being comfortable with change is a really good sign. Better to embrace it than run from it! Lately I’ve been working through the subtle and not-so-subtle changes in my own heart and mind, trying to define who I am at the very core of my being. Knowing myself seems to be crucial to developing my brand and business. But on a more personal level, knowing who I am means that I know my strengths and weaknesses, and can address them as needed.

I was recently away from the studio for a few days, and I took some of that time to focus on a couple personal and business exercises, as well as some major goal-setting. I’m going to share these exercises and some of the goals I’ve made over the next month or so, partly because I think documenting my goals here will help hold me to them, and partly because I think these exercises could be helpful for anyone to work through.

In the midst of my planning and goal-setting, I took a minute to ponder who I am and what I love. I began a list, jotting down words that resonated with me. It was the verbal version of my brand board. I wrote down the things that define me, that make me “me”, and the things that I love to the core of my being. I wrote without thinking, letting the words fill the paper. It was a stream of consciousness type exercise. Very simple, but satisfying. When I was done, I had compiled a written snapshot of Bethany Hway. I’ve found myself referring to it time and time again as I’ve been working on my re-branding and goal-setting. I have added to it, and admittedly scratched a few things off. I am well aware that this list will be ever-evolving, much like this blog. But for now, this is a pretty good glimpse of the person I am…

If you made a list like this, what would be on it? Post your top five for each category in the comments, or link to a post of your own with the full list. I’d love to hear!!

    Oh how I just adore your blog more now!!! What beautiful honesty and growth.

    I didn’t realize that you were from/in Minnesota to begin with, I guess – and certainly not that you graduated from NWC. Very, very cool! We are devout 96.5 listeners in our house. :)

    I’m in Sioux Falls and am praying that my kids want to go to NWC in 15 years or so. Anyway, thank you for sharing!

    God’s world is small! He is so grand, after all.

    God bless you,

    Rachel

  2. LOVE THIS! I was reading the list and giggling to myself as each word passed because I could imagine you writing these down and smiling to yourself. You are so honest and amazing! Love you Ms. Beth!

    I also recently came across your blog a week ago. Since then, I have been enjoying reading your archives.

    I have been thinking about change like you. First, recently I moved to the East coast from the West coast for my fiance’s work. This adjustment is challenging to me as I do not know anyone here, I never lived on the East coast, and whole cultures are different on the East coast. For a while, I hated the new life because I missed what I had and things I was so comfortable with. Later,I realized that I was getting be a person I hated the most-complainer. It was the turning point. Since then, I changed my perspective. I started enjoying the change that I made. My horizon opened. I started trying new things. Overall, change is good thing to grow internally. Present self exists due to the changes made in the past.

    I love your writings with honesty. Each can relate to.
